Tybee Pirate Fest Celebrates 20 Years of Pirate-Themed Fun

Tybee Island’s annual Pirate Festival is back and bigger than ever as it celebrates its 20th anniversary this weekend. Originally started in 2005 by a small group of locals looking to increase tourism in the off-season, the event has since become a staple in the Tybee community. What began as a modest gathering has now grown into a large-scale festival that draws visitors from all over, with activities ranging from live performances and a pirate parade to family-friendly entertainment.

This year’s festivities kicked off with the Buccaneer Ball and the crowning of the Pirate King and Queen at The Crab Shack. This weekend also introduces a new addition from last year: the Myers Rum Pirate Pub Crawl, which promises a lively day of hopping between some of Tybee’s favorite watering holes. But the main event spans the weekend with a variety of shows, carnival rides, and a Thieves Market packed with local vendors.

With Tybee Island’s rich pirate history as the backdrop, this year’s milestone celebration pays tribute to both the island’s past and its vibrant community spirit. Whether you’re a local or visiting for the first time, the Tybee Pirate Festival offers something for everyone—a mix of nostalgia, history, and plenty of pirate-themed revelry.
